Weather Research

JIM REED.

i went onto the Jim Reed website and was amazed by images.
Jim Reed is recognized as one of the world's most pioneering and accomplished extreme-weather photographers. Jim has documented record-setting storms for 21 consecutive years in the United States, this includes tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms, and floods. He has documented 19 hurricanes, including Katrina. He is currently doing interviews for TV, radio and print regarding Hurricane Sandy.

JIm's approach to weather photography has been singled out as one of the most unique and interpretive amongst photographers today. His credits include America Online, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Discovery Channel, Microsoft, National Geographic, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

Jim has used many skills from this image for example, timing, even though he had to make sure he was a good distance away for health and safety. In most of his images he uses the rule of thirds, the sky which is the top then the middle and the bottom of the picture.
This picture is really capturing. The way that the lightning has formed a cloud around all of it then the rest of the image is pure black. This captures the audiences attention through out the image.

This image is nice from the top of the image to the bottom. many of his images show the composition of 'Rule Of Thirds'. i love how many different type of blues there are in the sky. this photograph is so detailed and grapical there are many types of one colour in each section of the photo.
The shape of the image is good also how the bottom of the sanddune is slightly curved shaped.

This image is nice, the way the a strange piece of light comes through the image and ripples across the sea, the light, and the different

This photo looks almost 3 dimentional. The way that the top cloud is more forthcoming than the others and closer to the camera, The different shades of browns of the grass and meadow, with the darker distance of mountains really gives this image a sense of direction.

This photo is a nice landscape image. The variation of the trees what are scattered. the different shades of grey on the snow really give it a in depth feel.
This photo really caught my eye. from the composition of distance of the image compared to the sky clouds how its in a particular circle motion. it makes the photo look on edge how at the bottom the sides of the walkway aren't both green in symmetrical view so having it all green on the right hand side makes it look unbalanced.

Weather Experimentation 2 & final Images

RAIN RAIN RAIN

Today I went outside to take images of the weather. i thought it would be perfect as I woke up to fog hovering over the houses where I live.

I went later on at around 2pm when it started to rain. I travelled to shobnall sports leisure center because there are an archway of trees there and with the fog in the background I thought it would look nice.

The fog had rose and the images werent as promising as i thought, hoped and suspected. I looked around and found twigs off a tree with water droplets on them. i decided to take this image as it still represents weather.

These were the images I have edited and finished with.

This was the original image.
This is the edit i have deon to the photo which has involved more colour to the photo by increasing the saturation to it. I have edited my image like this because it reminds me being inspied by Bob martin. even though his images are sport, they are all so colourful, i added this tyouch to my photos which I think makes the image more appealing to the audiences eye.

Final image.

Everytime i managed to take a photo you couldnt actually see how much it was raining which was a real shame. I then started to think of takihng photos of rain in a different manor. This led me on to sit in my car as i watched the rain pour down the windos and front.

This was from the side of my car which i perticulaly love; i have edited these to see what it would look like with different edits.

This first one is edited to black and white which gives it a fantastic look. The second edit is a little bit more saturated which slightly turned the image blue ish, I decided to keep this as I thought it was effect also.

My next experimentation below was to capture the water falling from the sky onto my car glass front, as i did right at the bottom.. I wasnt thinking of editing this to be black and white and then a little light colour. I had an idea to boost the original picture of what it was and too see what it was like exposed to the maximum and i think its worked really well. It doesnt look too bright and the variation of colours workk well. I may class this as a fina limage for colour as well as weather.

Colour Research

JOEL MEYEROWITZ

Joel Meyerowitz is a street photographer in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, although his work is always photographed in colour. As an early advocate of colour photography (mid-60’s), Joel Meyerowitz was instrumental in changing the attitude toward the use of colour photography from one of resistance to nearly universal acceptance.

His photographs are more of landscapes that i am going to talk about rather than street life photography.

many of his images have only a few compositions to them; such as the rule of thirds and distances.

This image is good because i like the way in his photos that many of his images actually show colour to portray the mood of the image.
for example these colours show that this image was taken around evening time of 4pm as you ca see the sun setting which shows the shadows of the trees. this also ties in with shadow composition as well. Joel always seems to use vocal points in his images which are always directed from the middle of the image then you will look around the image. The only bad thing about this picture is that you can be distracted from the main focus because of the road on the side.

This image is very similar to the other image Joels because of the rule of thirds. the sky and clouds are at the top with the horizon line in the middle and grass/hills on the bottom half of the image.

This image is very moody looking, there isn't much colour going on here as the plants look like they are dying so the body of the plant is wilting over which he photographs nicely.

This photograph is one of his best ones because he has many compositions included in it, such as the distance from the trees which the camera is far from. As per usual the camera is pointed in the middle of the photograph, which separates the sky from the floor. The colours in this photgraph makes the image look positive as well, the mixture of nice blue and greens, event hough the trees are brown it still makes the image look pretty.

This image is so different compared to all the other images. for a start the image is captured at night/ evening time. There is shapes in this image which includes straight lines. The colour is quite a nice peaceful colour including the blues constrasting with darker blues for the trees then the mixture of green blending in well at the bottom.

Below is an article which i found on Joel. I thought it was interesting to read how his work has been talked about. I agree that his images have a subtle quality to them which i really admire.

BOB MARTIN

I like all of Bob Martins images because they all have many compositions in them.

This is a great images because it isn't a close up shot of the golf player. Many compositions of distances can be far and close. I love the simple variation of colour in the image in it. Also the amount of lines in the image.

This image is amazing. The pureness of the image and how there not many colours involved also. its good how the man is not holding the arrow shooter but it is in his mouth also. The colour of the pink bow really contrasts with the black background.

This is a really good image of people playing volleyball. the timing of the leg being directly straight is impeccable and shows great skill.
The variation of colour if this is amazing, wether he has edited them or not

This is one of my favourite images of Bobs. I love the way he has contrasted the red of the china colours to go against the jet black background. this brings attention to detail of how hard this gymnast is working and also how the light goes deeper and darker on her feet than the rest of the body. Also the creation of the line which brings more than one composition into the image.

This image really captures the essence of sport. I think that the right amount of people feet and soes are shown here otherwise the photo shouldn't have beent taken.
I think if the shoe shelf was a brighter or different colour then the picture wouldn't look right because it goes with the theme of dirt. being mucky and messy. hence the colour green goes with the colour brown which most of the shoes are covered in. theres not allot to say about this photo which just makes this photo completely in its self.

I like the angle and the composition of this photograph. It says allot about the photograph and what the image is about. Sometimes an image can look too wrong if the photograph is all in one colour but that because the shoe is covered in mud and is on mud then makes it more understandable and enjoyable to view.

There is so much direction in this photo i love it because of how the colours show what way the direction is going, there are blends of different blues, mixed with a white of the snow smoke which is still airing from the speed at which the skiier is going.

The amazing bit of this photo is that in the middle you cant see any of the direction or where the skiier has been so when you see the smoke which has practically shown you, this makes this image more genius.

I like this photo because of the colours in it and the sense of composition of the reflection of the cyclist; the are also many different shapes in this image and how the blue single line represents the rules of the game and also colour. The cyclist is also not too close to the camera but not too far either.

This is one of my favourite pictures also. the fact there is not allot to the photo gives it a great sense of subtlety. its fantastic how he has got such a beautiful background overlooking the water with a silhouette of the golf player infront.

Flowers Research

ANDY SMALL
Andy Small studied Fine Art. He photographs dramatic close up portraits of nature particularly flowers and his work has become know
n for its modern graphic style and striking use of colour.

His Fine Art background meant he spent as much time painting and drawing as he did developing his photography and this has had a profound influence on his style. Andy's images are described as being "very painterly" in their appearance, he has become one of the UK's most original flower photographers

Andy has quoted; "The natural world is my lifelong passion and provides inspiration for my drawing, painting and photography. Whilst I appreciate those breathtaking views, it is nature on an intimate level that I find most fascinating.
The macro lens is like a window that transports me into another world. In this place I observe details, shapes and patterns that are not usually seen even though most of the subjects are right under our noses"

These images are from his Neutral work.
I have seen his images of his neutral work and found out that from looking at these images that they are always on either a black background or a white background.

I also find that in these photographed the subjects of the photo are always situated in the middle of the image rather than the sides. this can keep the audiences eye on the subject at all times. I dont think that these images have been edited greatly because everything about these pictures looks like it is in its natural state.

The thing i like most about these images are that on each photo whatever the flower is like either the petals or seeds coming off it and all equally spread out, the proportion of the photo is good because as well as looking at the outside of the photo it mainly still captures your attention about the inner part of the flower.

Nature/ Flowers Experimentation and Final Images.

FLOWERS / NATURE.
This print screen was me experimenting on this final image little and more of the saturation a few notches I found that more of the colour would come out rather than it be over exposed by colour. I then had an idea to zoom in to see how close the auto focus went in and noticed that it was still quite sharp when I moved in a little so I decided to zoom the whole picture bigger and closer which makes the photo stood out instantly. I cropped the image which I screen grabbed and ended with my final image below.
This is the final image.
This photo was edited only slightly because i wanted the colour of the yellow to shine out most more than anything else in the picture. This picture shows this really well as the main head of the flower is in focus whilst the rest of the image is not in focus. This keeps the audiences eye mainly on the head of the flower. I made the constrast higher so thhat the flower head would be more defined than it was as well as the complimenting colour.
This is the final image.
I did edit this image much either because of the complexity of this flower, i wanted to keep it original, I turned the contrast up so the pink would out shine more of the other colours of the stem which makes the viewer eye moreattracted to that part of the flower rather than the thick stem.
This is the Final Image.

I have also taken photos of another flower which i will be adding to this category as well. I have slightly boosted the saturation of this image because the original was slightly not attractive and not eye catching.

This is the Final Image.

I think these images have turned out very successfully because they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye i think they would sell well. The bold colours are really appealing and quite a feature point.

Weather Experimentation and Final Images.

 WEATHER - SNOW

For this weather category i found it hard to choose how i would take my photographs like professionals did because their photos are from different countries and the close countries the weather are snow conditions so it will be quite a hard task for me to create a realistic looking image from the weather i am given here in Burton.

I was editing a few images on a website when i noticed you can add an 'winter wonderland' to the picture. looking at researchers such as Peter Cairns his images vary from still weather to pouring rain to fog.

I decided to take the image of a seagull which i took from Australia and edit it looking like it was in a blizzard more than a hot location. with a few touches of some extra snow i found myself looking at a blizzard background which was still colourful.

I then decided to change the saturation and temperature of the image so it would make it look like the conditions the animal was in was freezing.

When i turned the temperature down I realised it gave it a type of blue look which was very similar to freezing looks as blue represents cold, but it didnt look right, with this i turned down the saturation slightly which then made it perfect.

This was the starting image, ^ and this is the final image.

I have also done another edit which shows the bird flying in winter but the tone is in sepia and not black and white. although the sepia tone is effective i dont think it works aswell as athe black and white because it doest really represent this christmas/snnowy feel.

Sport Experimentation

For one of my subjects I have chosen sport. I visited Robert Sutton to visit fiends play 6 a side football so I took my Canon 1100D as the lighting would be floodlights so I used them which brightened my images well rather than taking extra flash lights.

With the photographs I took I decided that after I changed a few of the contrasts that the photos instantly looked better because it highlights the dark parts of the images out which then draws the audiences eye towards the football player which is great because in this shot below he is caught running.

Taking photographs at night was a lot more challenging than in the day. I would have set the camera on a high ISO with a fast shutter speed. If I could reshoot I would experiment using different lenses (to zoom in more), try using an even higher ISO, faster shutter speed and even using a tripod.

I think this was a good idea because when you are in a practical work area such as a small football field you have to move the camera constantly when you are looking for the perfect image to capture. Some if these images were captured better than others and surprisingly sometimes I didn't need to use a tripod. These are my first photos which I am pleased with and may use as ones of my final 6.
