My work is about taking 36 images of 6 different type of subjects, each being Sport, Nature/Flowers Weather, Abstract, Colour, and Still Life.
For this assignment we had to choose 6 categories of our choice and take 6 images from each category of according to what we like, we were also able to edit the photographs as much as we wanted to.
Still life was one of the easier images I could take for this assingment, with the chosen images I have got for my final 6 I have enjoyed photographing them all, the chocolate was a 'out of the moment' inspiration image with the Macro Lens which i enjoyed using, i didnt actually edit that photo much because of the colours that it already had made the image automatically special. The christmas decoration deer was quite a challenge in itself, I used my Canon 1100D and fount it difficult because it would stay upright, I then decided to use some tinsel underneath it so I could make it look more glittery than it already was. I finally managed so make it upright and make sure the bacvkground was plain also otherwise the distraction would be there.
With the elephant I imaged I had an idea with the other animals that they were going to act as a silhouette with a black shapes against the studio wall but the problem was that we needed the light to really be close to the ornaments but when it was there was no room for the camera to go so it wouldnt be photographed in the right position. I managed to change it to just the elephant on the wooden stand and it gave off a nice shadow so I decided to keep that as one of my last 6 images.
I fount out working with a Macro Lens was a very creative time for me, I feel like I can go to different levels with my photography than using just a nromal camera lens, I decided to mess around with some images i was taking and to see how close i would go, i took this image which was origionally gold and started to edit it too see what some different looks would look like. I then changed the colour tone of the image which gave me this final look what really made it looks like what it was, a christmas decoration, this could also be places in my Abstract images as well I think.
My last image can also be like an abstract if i didnt take the other stiff life image or changed the colour of it. Ilike the way most of it is in focus and the colours show up really well. I also like how you can see through the photo and through the front bit without failure so youre not just looking at the front row of the image.
When I was working on Weather I fount it was the most challenging photoshoot I had ever been on. The weather was not fantastic but I thought that the image what came out of it were good. I had mainly gone for the rain type of weather and snow, people might think it is a bit repetitive i havnt varied my weather images to frost as it was frosty but there are different thing about each rain image what makes them all look different. When I had took a picture on my phone of frost it can be deceveing because it looked clear and a good positive photo but when I photoshopped it, zooming in it looked grainy. The blue pole image is off a shelter where I noticed water droplets were dripping, I had an idea to take some images of it going quicker but i couldnt get the shot so i need to brush up on my skills of that. I decided to take the image of all the water droplets in a row which has a nice effect and edited some parts of the pole to neaten up the image a little bit. I used a website to help me edit the image of the seagull which I enjoyed editing but I had to try and make it as realistic as possible.
For the Flowers/Nature these are definitely some of the more
natural images I have taken. Not all of them needed re touching and editing,
only one the duck one and the chicks I have cropped so I can keep the attention
of the audiences eye without looking at the background. I have also slightly
turned up the saturation notch so it can look more colourful but not too much.
I have also done that on my flower images, too much saturation made the flower
lose its actual shape, you couldn’t see the outline of the plant, so only a
little editing would make both these flowers stand out in front of its
background. With the chicks and the ducks all in a row from left to right I had
to make this a panoramic image and struggled slightly. When I cropped the image
there was always going be a bit of the duck missing on the end so I had to
rotate the image to get everything included in the photo which then worked out
nicely
For the Abstract images I really enjoyed taking these. I
personally think that these are some of the best images I have created. At
first I was very wary on what I would take but when I came onto the subject of
Abstract and the thought, then I didn’t really seem too off putted about what
to take, I had done my research on what other famous abstract Photographers
were taking in their work and gave me a great sense of idea, The main artist I
took ideas from was Ciro Totku, the compositions of his images were inspiring
how you think you could know something but the element of difficulty still
remained.. I also love the positions of where the objects lie in the images. They
are not based in the middle of the image all of the time, the papers are at the
top, the building is to the left, the cans of paint are central, the leafs are
on opposite sides. I have photographed 6 separate objects; I won’t say what
they are because that ruins the element of Abstract. The first one came me and
should come to a photographer when you look at something but you look at it in
a different way, you shouldn’t just look at it, you should look at it in
different ways, different views and angles this made me take a photo of a small
piece of it, this can really make an image more curious.
The second image was an object when I was using the Canon Macro lens, I enjoy
taking close up images and I thought I would take this one as I am really
interested in taking images of textured objects. I then edited it so the colour
wouldn’t look as obvious to show what it is and loved the outcome of the image.
The third was then taken where I went to a certain place, I was wary of this
image because you can sort of tell what it is, instead of rotating the image I
remained it on its side and edited it to monochrome, when asking other what
they though they felt like black and white suited it better most. The next one
was a random photograph which I didn’t intend of taking but because of what was
on it I thought I would try. I like the image because only a little of it is in
focus and that’s all you need really for you to think ''I don’t know what it
can be''. The last image was fun editing it because I wanted something quite extravagant
and the colour really shows this, I was worried people will know what it is but
with some artist research on a few abstract images I then saw that you could
work out what it was so maybe not everything in the image has to be 'unknown'.
For the Colour photographs I couldn’t really find the inspiration I needed
to take the images. I knew that I wanted it to be something colourful so it
really showed the definition of what 'Colour' was; I then started to brainstorm
ideas on what was colourful around me what was also practical. I then saw that I
had colours right in front of me...
I used the tinsel with bedroom lighting and
saw how it gave out a great shine to the camera which is perfect for what I
needed; as well as the obvious colour. I took a photo and instantly liked the
results of it, I then though how can I make a better image of something so
good? For which I changed the camera settings to a faster shutter speed and
moved the camera around this gave me my second image which I automatically loved.
The thing which I loved about the image was how the colour seemed to be warping
in between each other and the fact that in the middle of the image some of the
sharpness and focus remained. For the other colours images I decided to take
some images of the flowers I had in the garden because where else could you
find such colour? I decided to change my theory a bit and do everything a
little bit different than what normal photographers do but I decided to change
the angle of it so it would look different, the only down thing about working
at that angle is that on the side of the image there is a part of the picture
where it isn’t a flower and the audiences eye might get distracted but that
area is out of focus which then leads you back. With many of my colour shots I
have edited them so that the saturation is higher which really brigs out the
colour what I wanted; except from the tinsel which was already colourful enough
for my personal liking.
For Sport this was not my favourite of subjects because of the conditions I
had to take these images in, it would have had to have been the hardest subject
and the most skilful required, going out to the astro turf was simple enough
but without having the longer lens to travel to the other end of the pitch was
hard and was a patience game waiting for the players to come back to the other
end. When that happened I had to be right on time and some images show this and
some look slightly effective. The other images I enjoyed taking and found it
quite simply to do, I changed the angle of the images so they were looked at
different and the only editing I did for them was t make the background look
brighter.
Not many of my ideas had changed, the only what was constantly changing was what I was going to take and what images i were to have in my final 36 images. I had taken all the photographs that I wanted it was just how many of them was I going to use and which ones were the strongest out of them all.
The equipment i have used is the Canon1100D and also i have added a Macro Lens on the end of it so i can shoot my close up shots. Many skills i have used for this assignment has been testing and i have had to of used many different shutter speeds which I struggled with to get perfect.
I had a few problems with sorting my ISO and shutter speed out on the football match images, although I did not have a tripod I was unable to perfectly get the running shot of the footballers perfectly without camera shake. The lights were good though as they were very bright and I only had to change my ISO up a few notches to capture that. Some of the subjects in the still life was hard for example I was trying to keep the ornament still even though it was constantly collapsing on me all the time.
there have been around 4-5 artists who has influenced my work; they would be Bob Martin for sport the way that his images are so colourful, hencec why i have slightly pitched up the saturation for all of my Sport images, Ciro Totku has inspired me greatly for the Abstract Images where you can see what they are in a few but still gives you the sense of cluelessness. For colour I looked at a man called Joel Meyerowitz, although he is a colour photographer he doesnt really have allot of colours showing in his work, I like the different compositions in the work. For weather i have also looked at Jim Reed.
I am around 95% happy with my final images. Some of these images I am very pleased with and would like to place in my portfolio of work. Some of these are really strong and i am surprised how well organised i am for this assignment, if I was to do this again I would wish to be in a different town and the variation of the image types can be spread out allot mroe than his one, but i am happy with my result of work, and the amount of hard work I have put into this assignment.
