Colour Research

JOEL MEYEROWITZ

Joel Meyerowitz is a street photographer in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, although his work is always photographed in colour. As an early advocate of colour photography (mid-60’s), Joel Meyerowitz was instrumental in changing the attitude toward the use of colour photography from one of resistance to nearly universal acceptance.

His photographs are more of landscapes that i am going to talk about rather than street life photography.

many of his images have only a few compositions to them; such as the rule of thirds and distances.

This image is good because i like the way in his photos that many of his images actually show colour to portray the mood of the image.
for example these colours show that this image was taken around evening time of 4pm as you ca see the sun setting which shows the shadows of the trees. this also ties in with shadow composition as well. Joel always seems to use vocal points in his images which are always directed from the middle of the image then you will look around the image. The only bad thing about this picture is that you can be distracted from the main focus because of the road on the side.

This image is very similar to the other image Joels because of the rule of thirds. the sky and clouds are at the top with the horizon line in the middle and grass/hills on the bottom half of the image.

This image is very moody looking, there isn't much colour going on here as the plants look like they are dying so the body of the plant is wilting over which he photographs nicely.

This photograph is one of his best ones because he has many compositions included in it, such as the distance from the trees which the camera is far from. As per usual the camera is pointed in the middle of the photograph, which separates the sky from the floor. The colours in this photgraph makes the image look positive as well, the mixture of nice blue and greens, event hough the trees are brown it still makes the image look pretty.

This image is so different compared to all the other images. for a start the image is captured at night/ evening time. There is shapes in this image which includes straight lines. The colour is quite a nice peaceful colour including the blues constrasting with darker blues for the trees then the mixture of green blending in well at the bottom.

Below is an article which i found on Joel. I thought it was interesting to read how his work has been talked about. I agree that his images have a subtle quality to them which i really admire.
